May 16, Alexander Lukashenko signed the decree №219 "On the construction of the Vitebsk hydroelectric power station on the Western Dvina river". According to the document, before January 1, 2019 will be implemented Vitebsk hydroelectric complex construction. Contract signed for the construction of RUP "Vitebskenergo" and the Chinese company China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd.

It is planned that there will be four HPP hydro unit with a total installed capacity of 40 MW. Construction cost of the contract is almost $ 190 million exclusive of VAT and customs duties. Funding for construction will be financed by the credit of the State Development Bank of China and equity RUE "Vitebskenergo". Belarusian organizations must complete at least 30% of the total value of works contract.
