Vitebsk Regional Court considered the appeal of Antonina Pivonos

Vitebsk activist Antonina Pivonos continues to fight for the public authorities to Belarus began to carry out the decision of the Committee on Human Rights, the UN adopted in respect of it. Now it's considered the regional court, where they sent an appeal to a court Railway area. However, to convince the judges of the regional court failed: they have forsaken the lower court decision stands.

Recall that in March 2008, Antonina Pivonos been brought to administrative responsibility for alleged violation of the order of organizing and holding mass events. The activist tried to appeal the penalty imposed then on it was all courts - came up to the Supreme Court of Belarus - and never was able to get justice.

Finally Antonina Pivonos asked the UN Human Rights Committee, which considered her case for several years and in 2012 declared that the Belarusian authorities, by bringing a woman to justice, violated her rights. According to the decision of the HRC, Belarus as a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Optional Protocol to the Covenant, Antonina Pivonos obligation to compensate the damage it has suffered as a result of unjust punishment in 2008. However, the authorities have ignored the decision of the UN. Did not protect the activist also the court in which she sought to force the State to comply with the said decision of the HRC.

Antonina Pivonos not going to give up. It is possible that now it will be all the circles of the judicial system in Belarus, ensuring that the state fulfill its international obligations. If the courts of the country once again fails to find the truth, it is probably again appeal to the UN Human Rights Committee. If that happens, it will be an unprecedented event: it seems no one has complained to the Human Rights Committee that a country refuses to comply with the committee's decision.
